15. BarcodeSuite
add chapter

The Barcode Suite enables the recognition and use of barcodes to process scan orders. To activate barcode recognition, first define barcode indices via the “Indices” tab of the BCS-2 Office Configurator or Professional Administrator.

Create and edit Barcode-Index: Use the “New…” or “Edit…” buttons at the bottom of the index list to call up the “Index definition” form, in which you define and edit the job index.

For a barcode index, select the following settings:

Index-Type: The index type determines the type of index field. A barcode recognition index is of type “String”.

Barcode: This index has an associated barcode area. It gets its value from a barcode:  Activate the checkbox to use barcode recognition and assignment in the application. In combination with the index query “Recognize barcode on the first page” the index is automatically filled after the first scan.

editable: User can change the value: The index can be edited by the user.

Barcode Assignment: The selection and assignment of the barcode areas to the defined indices takes place in BCS-2. To do this, first create a new job for the corresponding workflow. You will also need a scan of a representative sheet of barcodes.

Use the “Assign barcode areas” menu item in the “Job” menu to open the form for recognizing and assigning the barcode areas.

In the viewer of the form, BCS-2 displays the current scan and the barcode areas automatically recognized on it. If no barcode area was recognized, create a barcode area by selecting (right-clicking and dragging) the desired barcode. You can delete superfluous barcode areas using the “Remove current selection” button. First select the area to be deleted in the viewer. Use the “Remove all selections” button to delete all created barcode areas.

Create areas generously around the barcode. In this way, the barcode is recognized even if it is not exactly in the same place in the image, e.g. because the sheet was placed slightly offset.

Assign Barcode: By selecting an area, you enable barcode recognition and assign an index to the barcode area.

If the barcode recognition is successful, BCS-2 backgrounds the area in green and displays the value of the barcode in the “Recognized barcode” field as long as the area is selected. Use the drop-down list below the viewer to select the desired index for this barcode area and assign it using the “Assign index to the selected rectangle” button. BCS-2 then displays the assigned index in the area.

In order to accept the data and to activate the automatic assignment, BCS-2 must be restarted.
For optimal, automatic barcode recognition, we recommend scanning in fixed formats and positioning the barcode sheets as precisely as possible for the scan.
